Effects of erosion and deposition on particle size distribution of deposited farmland soils on the chinese loess plateau Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Zhao,Pei; Shao,Ming An; Omran,Wail; Amer,Abdel-monem Mohamed.
Particle size distribution (PSD) in the soil profile is strongly related to erosion, deposition, and physical and chemical processes. Water cycling and plant growth are also affected by PSD. Material sedimented upstream of the dam constructions formed large areas of deposited farmland (DF) soils on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), which has been the site of the most severe soil erosion in the world. Two DFs without tillage on the CLP were chosen to study the combined effect of erosion and check dams on PSD. Eighty-eight layers (each 10 cm thick) of filled deposited farmland (FDF) soils and 22 layers of silting deposited farmland (SDF) soils of each studied soil profile were collected and 932 soil samples were investigated using laser granulometry. The...

High fire temperature changes soil aggregate stability in slash-and-burn agricultural systems Scientia Agricola
Thomaz,Edivaldo Lopes.
ABSTRACT Fire is a key controlling factor in ecosystem dynamics worldwide, especially, in tropical areas under slash-and-burn agricultural systems. Farmers use fire as a tool to clean the land, and benefit from nutrient enrichment from ash-soil heating. However, fire can cause some detrimental effects on soil systems, such as organic carbon depletion, increased soil erodibility, and changes to aggregate stability. In this study, an experimental fire was applied to a plot of land following the local traditional practice of slash-and-burn. The fire temperature was monitored in the field, and its effect on soil aggregate stability was assessed. The fire temperature on soil surface was measured in four trenches, and it ranged from 355 to 660 °C (average 484 ±...

Soil and water losses in eucalyptus plantation and natural forest and determination of the USLE factors at a pilot sub-basin in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Bárbara Pereira Christofaro; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Batista,Pedro Velloso Gomes; Pontes,Lucas Machado; Araújo,Elias Frank; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Monitoring water erosion and the factors that control soil and water loss are essential for soil conservation planning. The objective of this study was to evaluate soil and water losses by water erosion under natural rainfall in eucalyptus plantations established in 2001 (EF2), and 2004 (EF1), native forest (NF) and bare soil (BS), during the period of 2007 to 2012; and to determine the USLE factors: rain erosivity (R), erodibility (K) of a Red Argisol and the cover-management factor (C) for EF1, EF2 and NF at a pilot sub-basin, in Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil. The R factor was estimated by the EI30 index, using rainfall data from a gauging station located at the sub-basin. The soil and water losses were monitored in erosion plots, providing...

Soil losses from typic cambisols and red latosol as related to three erosive rainfall patterns Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Aquino,Regimeire Freitas; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Freitas,Diego Antonio França de; Curi,Nilton; Avanzi,Junior Cesar.
Rainfall erosivity is one of the main factors related to water erosion in the tropics. This work focused on relating soil loss from a typic dystrophic Tb Haplic Cambisol (CXbd) and a typic dystrophic Red Latosol (LVdf) to different patterns of natural erosive rainfall. The experimental plots of approximately 26 m² (3 x 8.67 m) consisted of a CXbd area with a 0.15 m m-1 slope and a LVdf area with 0.12 m m-1 slope, both delimited by galvanized plates. Drainpipes were installed at the lower part of these plots to collect runoff, interconnected with a Geib or multislot divisor. To calculate erosivity (EI30), rainfall data, recorded continuously at a weather station in Lavras, were used. The data of erosive rainfall events were measured (10 mm precipitation...

Un engraissement côtier résultant de l’érosion des bassins-versants cultivés : exemple de la baie du Galion à la Martinique ArchiMer
Saffache, P.
The progradation of the shores of the Gallon Bay (Martinique) has been measured based on diachronic mapping analysis. The sedimentary volume which accumulates along the coast and in the bay (under the water surface) is unknown. Erodibility has been surveyed on a square meter scale and extrapolated to the watersheds. The results show that most sediments originate from the farmed surfaces, they are then entrained by the runoff and the Gallon river and deposited along the coast, where the bathymetry and currentology of the bay facilitate sediment retention. The harmful effects of anthropogenic influence in the area are discussed.
